University Boiler Replacement – Summer Boiler Hire

The Challenge

Our partner got in touch looking for a reliable temporary solution to keep hot water running across the campus during major replacement works in their existing plant room. The boiler upgrade was scheduled for over the summer holidays, which meant fewer people on site, but it was still essential to provide full coverage of heating (if needed) and hot water across all campus buildings, but most importantly the accommodation.

Even during the quieter months, some students remain on campus, and uninterrupted access to hot water was non-negotiable. The temporary setup needed to be powerful, efficient and ready to step in without any disruption to day-to-day life. Our job was to make sure no one noticed the existing boiler was even offline.

The Solution

Since this was a planned upgrade, we had the chance to get ahead of the game by carrying out a free site survey before the job kicked off. That gave us a clear picture of what kit would be best for the job. After checking out the site, we specified a 300kW boiler, paired with a 300kW oil burner and a 1000L calorifier… plenty of power to cover the campus and keep everything running smoothly. Our 300kW micro boiler is a really impressive boiler – its small footprint, manoeuvrability and powerful output makes it really great for sites like this.

During the survey, we also scoped out the perfect spot for the setup. We found a location nice and close to the plant room, which made it easy to tie into the existing system. At the same time, it was tucked far enough out of the way to avoid disrupting anyone still on site.

To keep things as quiet as possible, we surrounded the boiler package with acoustic barriers – cutting down on noise and keeping the peace around campus. Luckily, with it being the summer holidays for this install, the campus was quiet and we had plenty of space to use a HIAB to get the boiler in place withe ease.

The Result

Because this was a planned upgrade, we had plenty of time to carry out a detailed site survey, organise logistics and get everything ready well in advance. That prep work really paid off, making the delivery and installation of the boiler package smooth and straightforward. Planned hires like this are ideal – no last-minute scrambles, just a well-executed install with everything running like clockwork.

Installing during the summer break was another bonus. With fewer people around campus, we had a clear run at getting the equipment in place, including the acoustic barriers, without causing any disruption. No surprises, no setbacks,  just a clean, efficient install from start to finish.

The boiler package has been running throughout the summer, and with the potential for the upgrade works to carry on into the autumn term, the university has peace of mind knowing student accommodation will stay warm and have hot water whenever it’s needed.

“Another successful project and great work by the entire team for an easy, smooth install and delivery!” – Anthony Jeffers, Northern Hire Manager

Reliable Heating and Cooling Solutions for the Education Sector

From keeping classrooms warm during a boiler breakdown in the middle of winter, to providing cooling solutions for summer exams, we understand the critical impact of temperature control on student and staff wellbeing. The School Premises (England) Regulations 2012 does not specify minimum temperatures for any parts of a school, however the National Education Union’s position is that temperatures in school classrooms should be at least 18ºC (64.4ºF). Schools also have a duty of care, so it’s important students, staff and parents/guardians are kept informed of any emergency temperature control situations and that the issues are resolved in a safe, timely manner.

Unexpected heating or cooling failures often occur within educational buildings and these can disrupt daily operations and learning environments, which is why Celsius Hire provides rapid emergency response solutions, delivering boilers, chillers, fan coils, AHUs and all accompanying ancillaries to restore conditions quickly.  Our industrial-scale heating and cooling solutions cater to a variety of needs, including being able to provide suitable comfort heating for multiple classrooms within a temporary structure, to supplying temporary hot water throughout a college.

We also work with facilities management teams and local authorities to develop contingency plans, ensuring schools, colleges and universities are prepared for any situation. And with tight budget allocations to work with, hiring equipment can save on expenditure, resources and time.

Applications include;

  • Comfort heating for classrooms, lecture halls, and temporary structures
  • Temporary systems for construction or renovation projects
  • Emergency boilers for hot water supply
  • Fan coils providing the ability to adjust temperatures as needed (these units requires a chilled or hot water source to its coil)
