5.6MW Temporary Boiler Hire Kept Salisbury Hospital Running During Flue Replacement

The Challenge

Salisbury Hospital’s main district energy plant room fed heating and hot water to the whole hospital. The flues serving it were due for replacement, and with a flue stack 30 metres high, it was a big job. The hospital needed temporary plant big enough to carry the full main circuit for the several months the works ran.

Access was tight and there was very little room to unload. It was a live CDM site with plenty of other trades working around the main project. The plant room’s connection points called for special fittings and adapters. Our engineers were well used to sites like this. We planned the delivery and install around the site and worked alongside the main contractor, so the job fitted in with everything else going on.

The Solution

We brought in three gas-fired temporary boilers: two at 2.2MW and a 1300kW Boiler, giving 5.6MW in total. Three plate heat exchangers sat between our plant and the hospital’s system to keep the two mechanically separate.

The client did the enabling works and gave us connection points on the existing LTHW flow and return headers and the gas header. We connected onto both to supply the main heating circuit. Working with the main contractor, we ran up to 600 metres of stainless steel braided flexible hose for the LTHW and gas lines, from the plant outside down into the plant room.

The 30-Metre Flues

The flues were the big moment on this job. Each boiler needed a flue extension rising more than 30 metres, held up by temporary scaffold. With that much plant close to the surrounding buildings, the flues had to go that high to meet flue gas regulations. The client managed the extensions, and our team made sure the boilers were ready to connect to them. Even one temporary flue at that height is rare, and this job had three.

What we supplied:

  • 2 x 2.2MW gas-fired temporary boilers
  • 1 x 1.3MW gas-fired temporary boiler
  • 3 x temporary plate heat exchangers
  • Up to 600 metres of stainless steel braided flexible hose for LTHW and gas

The Result

The plant went on hire in mid-August 2026. Heating and hot water stayed on across the hospital throughout the flue works, and at the time of writing the boilers were still running.

“This was a really interesting project to be involved with, working alongside a great M&E client on a busy CDM site. The temporary flue extensions made it especially satisfying, because you rarely see temporary flues go to that height. The installation ran smoothly, and it’s something we’re proud of as a team.”
