Keep Your Studio Cool Without Disrupting Production
Cooling a Live Studio Needs Careful Planning
When it comes to cooling a studio, there are many factors to consider. From air movement and sound levels to equipment positioning, duct routes, electrical supply and access, designing the right chiller hire package is essential. A stage may need a high volume of cool air, with units positioned a safe distance from microphones. Meanwhile, dressing rooms, make-up areas, site offices and technical rooms may benefit from smaller, localised cooling solutions. When humidity starts to rise, keeping actors camera-ready becomes more difficult. Under hot studio lights, make-up can melt or run, hair and wigs can frizz and costumes can quickly become uncomfortable.
By partnering with us, a team that understands the demands of production, we help keep touch-ups to a minimum. To design the right solution for your needs, our experienced engineers will visit your site (off-camera) and carry out a free site survey. Depending on your requirements, we can even get you up and running in just a few hours. We’ll also coordinate installation around rehearsals, takes, set access and other contractors, helping to ensure the system supports your production rather than getting in the way.
What we can offer:
A Complete Chiller Hire Package for Film Studios
We’ve got plenty of experience in supporting film and television studios for when systems go off-script. From providing additional capacity during peak summer productions to supporting plant replacement projects and emergency cooling requirements, we deliver flexible chiller hire packages tailored to the needs of each production environment.
On a recent project, a large film studio needed additional summer cooling during the production of a Hollywood blockbuster (top secret). We designed a studio chiller hire setup with 2 x 125kW chillers and 8 x 50kW air handling units, providing recirculated comfort cooling across the busy set and helping to manage the substantial heat generated by production lighting.
With filming continuing throughout the installation, every element had to be carefully planned around the production schedule. Our engineers worked between takes, installing pipework and ducting above and beneath the set and discreetly routing cooled air through false stairways, furniture and kitchen cabinets. This delivered effective cooling exactly where it was needed, while keeping disruption to the cast, crew and filming process to a minimum. This is just one example of how we’ve successfully supported major studio projects.

Large stages usually need a chiller and air handling unit package, with ducting used to distribute cooled air. Smaller rooms may use portable air conditioning or spot coolers. The final selection depends on the heat load, studio volume, target temperature, sound constraints and available space outside or within the building.
Holding areas can go from comfortable to crowded very quickly, particularly when 100 to 200 extras are waiting between scenes. A temporary chiller and air handling setup can help move large volumes of air, reduce heat build-up and make long waits far more comfortable.
A sound stage packed with lighting may need high-volume cooling, while dressing rooms, offices and make-up areas may only need smaller local systems. We can design a solution around each zone rather than treating the whole production site as one space.
Sound levels are considered during the survey and design. The main plant can often be positioned outside or away from sensitive recording areas, with air delivered through ducting. Fan speed, air velocity and outlet position also need to be reviewed. The final arrangement depends on the studio layout and the sound requirements for the production.
We work around you. Our engineers will talk through the setup, determining access windows, stop points, working routes and set protocols with your production or facilities team before installation. Complex pipework and ducting may take time to route safely, so early planning gives the best opportunity to avoid disruption.
Hire can cover a short shoot, a seasonal production period, a plant replacement or a longer studio programme. We agree the duration, maintenance plan and any changes in expected heat load before the hire begins, with flexibility to review the package if the production schedule changes.
