Temporary Heating for a Biomass District Heating Scheme in the Midlands
The Challenge
Our client, a heating maintenance contractor, looks after a biomass district heating scheme in the Midlands that supplies a group of homes from a central plant room. When the plant failed, several domestic properties on the network lost their heating.
On a district heat network, homes rely on the central plant. If that plant goes down, every property it feeds goes cold with it. The contractor needed a temporary heat source that could plug into the existing heat main and get the network running again, without waiting on repairs to the biomass system.
The Solution
We supplied a 300kW oil-fired boiler with a 2,000-litre fuel tank to keep it running on site.
Our team delivered the full package by HIAB. We then connected the boiler into the existing heat main using 2″ stainless steel PN16 flanged hoses, elbows and gaskets. The boiler runs from the site’s 16A single-phase supply, so the job didn’t need a generator.
Once everything was connected, we commissioned the boiler and brought the network back up to temperature. When the biomass plant is back in service, we’ll de-install the boiler and collect it by HIAB.
Kit list
- 300kW oil-fired boiler
- 2,000-litre fuel tank
- 2″ stainless steel PN16 flanged hoses
- HIAB delivery and collection
- Installation and commissioning
The Result
Heat is back on across the network. Residents receive it through their normal distribution pipework, with no changes needed inside their homes. The contractor now has a stable temporary supply in place and can repair the biomass plant without residents going cold.
“With a heat network, one failure leaves a whole group of households without heating, so you feel the pressure from the first call. The client knew what they needed. We got the boiler, fuel tank and all the flanged fittings to site on one HIAB delivery. Connecting into the existing heat main meant nobody had to touch anything inside the homes, and that kept the job simple for everyone. It was a good, collaborative job and I’d happily work with the team again.”

Temporary Heating for District Heating and Heat Networks
District energy networks supply cooling and heating to multiple buildings from a single energy centre. Most use boilers for heating, though some run on chillers or heat pumps. Everyone connected relies on that one plant room, so a failure there hits the whole network at once.
We support district energy operators and maintenance contractors with:
- Oil and gas fired boilers that connect straight onto district energy pipework. Single units go up to 2MW, and we can couple multiple units together for larger networks.
- Plate heat exchangers and pump sets to integrate temporary plant with your system
- Storage cylinders and calorifiers for large clean hot water systems
- Dry air coolers to provide a heat load when you need to commission a new energy centre before the network is connected
